Review : Travelled thru UK etc for a 6weeks. No one told me about the lack of fridges in hotels. The Frio was perfect. It kept the huge amount of insulin I needed to carry perfectly. Stayed cold for days then I just recharged it and was off again. Best travel mate ever.

Questions (29)
Can you freeze a Frio?

Hello, Frio Wallets work without the need to freeze ice packs, but will only keep medications stored at a temperature between 18 - 26 degrees. If you're wanting to store medication at a lower temperature (between 2 to 8 degrees), you can purchase one of the travel bags such as the Medactiv iCool Weekender and these include a freezer/ice pack which needs to be placed in the freezer prior to use. Kind Regards,

Can I carry Frio extra large wallet in hand baggage in flights?

Hello, Please see the below link which will hopefully cover any Frio related questions you may have. The short answer is yes, but there is more information below Kind Regards,

How many Lantus SoloStar pens can the Frio Extra Large wallet hold?

Hi. The Frio Extra Large Wallet can hold 8 pens.

What will fit 3 Bydureon injection pens to keep at temperature required when travelling on plane

According to the Astra Zeneca website, Bydureon should be stored at, "During the shelf life, BYDUREON should be stored at 2°C to 8°C. However, BYDUREON may be kept for up to 4 weeks below 30°C during the shelf life. Refrigerate. Do not freeze. Store in the original pack to protect from light." A Frio Extra Large Wallet should be able to fit between 2 and 3 Bydureon Pens if the needle is not on the Bydureon Pen. The Frio Wallet will keep its contents stored at 18-26 degrees Celsius for 45 hours. If you are travelling for more than 4 weeks you will need to use a Medactiv iCube, which keeps contents stored at between 2 to 8°C for 36 hours.

Hi there, I am taking my 10 year old T1D son on an 11 day trip to Thailand. I'm curious about which cooling pouch to purchase. I will be bringing 2 x actrapid pens, 2 x novorapid pens and 2 x lantus pens plus 2 glucagon pens. Thank you for your advice.

Hi. An Extra Large Frio Wallet will be perfect for the 6 different insulin pens you need to take. Glucagon needs to be kept a little cooler than insulin, any of the Medactiv iCool's or the Medactiv Easy Bag Classic will fit your Glucagon pens and keep them cool enough so that they work if needed.

I am flying to Mumbai before a cruise to Athens. On the cruise we will have a small fridge so that is not a problem. We are away four weeks so will take enough insulin for six weeks and divide my supplies between bags incase of lost luggage. I use the 100ml pens. What so you suggest I take, the larger Frio Wallet or two smaller ones

Hi. Good question. We would recommend two bags, this will allow you to split your insulin supplies during travel, ensuring that if one bag is misplaced, you will still have a supply of insulin.

Hi, You mentioned that "Please remember that Insulin that is not kept continuously refrigerated only has a 28 day shelf life." We will be travelling for 5 weeks and there are a couple of long haul flights (12 hours and 19 hours). For the long trip we are planning to carry around 12 pens with us. I was just wondering how we can keep all these unopened pens with us on the flights. By the look of it Frio bag can keep them cool 18-26 degree, so it will be good for the opened pens, but the unopened pens will need to be kept refrigerated, will frio bag still work for them? Or we better off with an iCool Medicube or something similar. Thanks in advance Coco

Hi Coco. Yes you are correct the Frio is perfect for storing the opened insulin, or any insulin for a 28 day period. For the long haul flights or for transporting insulin for more than 28 days you will need a iCool Medicube, which will keep the insulin stored at a refrigerated temperature. Please be aware that all the iCool range uses a patented ice pack that does require access to freezers to be reactivated.

I am travelling to America and will be staying for one year. I have been advised to take 1 year supply of insulin which is made up of 24x 10 ml vials and also flexi pens in case the pump fails. Will the frio bags be okay to use in transit as it will be at least a 24 hour flight ( this includes in transit)? I plan to put them in a fridge once I arrive, will the insulin last me a year since it is not kept between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Thank you

Hi. You will need a Medactiv Prestige or Medicube, as once the Insulin has been stored at room temperature it must be used within 28 days.

We are travelling to UK and the don't have refrigeration in there hotels he has to talke a least 5-6 nova mix 30 Flexi pens with him Will one xl Frio pouch be enough for him He will need it for the plane so 4 days he will need the pouch Then we go on a cruise ship Thankyou

Hi. Yes, an Extra Large Frio Wallet, will hold 5-6 NovoFlex Pens. If you continue to reactivate the Frio by immersing it in water until the cooling gel forms it will keeps its contents cool continuously. You will need to remove the contents of the Frio Wallet before reactivating the Frio Wallet in water. Please remember that Insulin that is not kept contimuosly refrigerated only has a 28 day shelf life.

Hi. Iam travelling to China and need to take one refillable pen with 7x3ml cartridges plus 5 disposable pens. Which Frio wallet would be the most suitable. Kevin.

Hi Kevin. Unfortunately I was not able to test that amount of cartridges and pens in an extra large wallet. Based calculations I have done using the size of a pen and a cartridge you should be able to fit 5 disposable pens and 7 x 3mL cartridges in a single extra large wallet.

All my medications need to be stored at 2 to 8. Having recently travelled with a fridge to go I had enormous problems as most motels now don't have 'fridges with freezer compartments. Can you suggest anything else I can use. Thanks

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately all of the travel bags we have available require a freezer/ice packs to keep medication stored at between 2 to 8 degrees celsius. Frio Wallets work without the need to freeze ice packs, but will only keep medications stored at a temperature between 18 - 26 degrees.

Hello I'd like to inquire about following: What about lifetime of FRIO wallet? If I use it daily and refresh it in cold water a day after day. Will this lessen its lifetime? How many year can I still using it? At home and in case of keeping FRIO wallet free from insulin, how should I keep it? Thanks

Hi. The Frio Wallet should continue to work for a number of years, even if used daily, however over time the crystals will take longer to form into a cooling gel. When you are not using the Frio Wallet, and allow the Frio to completely dry out naturally until the cooling gel returns to a crystal form. The drying out period can take between 2-4 weeks depending on the external climate. You can accelerate the drying out period by using one of the following methods; 1) Place near a heat source. 2) Hang on a clothesline. 3) Leave on a window sill in a sunny position. However do NOT place the Frio in a tumble dryer.

What is the best size for two refillable novo echo pens and a spare cartridge each? Also, can these be used with metal pens? Thanks

Hi Anna. The Large or Extra Large would be the best size.

CAn i buy this wallet with our ndss card?

You can purchase a Frio Wallet with or without an NDSS card.

What size Frio pack is best for 5 Lantus SoloStar injection pens? Garry Brady
